Marine LPG Installations

MARINE LPG

Leisure sailor, Motor Yacht, Yacht Racer, Charter Boat or a commercial vessel GAS SAFETY applies to every one with LPG on board.

For the non commercial sailor its easy to ignore. Its not like the GAS POLICE are going to bang on your door. However should anything happen to endanger life the responsibility of a vessel in your charge is yours.

Keep things well maintained, serviced regularly and up to standard for your safety and peace of mind

STAY SAFE

As luck would have it not only are we Gas Safe Registered engineers we are also active yachtsman having participated in countless RORC offshore races inc Fastnet, C600 etc.

We know about on board Gas Safety.

As a leisure yachtsman, a racer or an operator of an MCA coded vessel gas safety onboard should be taken very seriously.

The probability is your yachts LPG gas system has been installed to CE regulations. However it still needs to be maintained and checked regularly.

LPG is heavier than air so any gas leaks will either sink below the bilges or if within the Gas Storage Locker it should vent to an external drain.

IN CASE OF A GAS LEAK

1./Shut the Gas off at its supply

2/Create as much ventilation below as the sea conditions will allow

3/ Isolate electrical supplies or avoid using.

4/ Lift Sole boards to increase ventilation

5/ You can if conditions allow and you feel it's safe to do so. Flood the bilges to push the air/gas above the sole boards.

6/ If conditions allow maximise air flow through the yacht with the forward hatch open directing air to below with the companion way hatch open to maximise airflow.

IN CASE OF FIRE

1/ Shut of Gas and if possible the fuel supply.

2/ If a radio is accessible send a May Day.

3/ Tackle the fire without personal risk.

4/ Have a responsible crew member prep the launch of the liferaft

5/ Grab bag ready

6/ If the fire takes hold abandon ship immediately

I know they say never step down into a Liferaft only up. Not when its on fire. Head count, deploy Liferaft and get at least 300 yards away.

Fortunately fires are rare but they do happen and the potential is always there.

Fires are usually Gas or Electrical. Keep your boat well maintained, replace worn or corroded parts. Corrosion is a big problem on the electrical side.

We experienced a smoke plume from behind the control panel once. Electrics off, opened the panel and a newish Raymarine Sea Talk convertor was on fire.

To this day we have no idea why. Replaced it, 5 years have now passed and no repeat. Raymarine not bothered... a bit worrying.
